Poldhu Cove

Poldhu Cove, Cornwall

Cornish Landscape photo

So many options for photography in Cornwall, yet I seem to be going back to places I know and love. I guess it stems from understanding what will be available to photograph in the conditions I have, combined with little time just to get out and take photos of subjects I like. I have written here – Caerthillian Cove located on The Lizard in Cornwall about building your knowledge about an area.

Poldhu offers a large expanse of sand at low tide, with the sun over to the left of this image. There is also a small stream flowing out to sea, down the beach which offers lovely leading lines into any photograph.

The top of the beach homes a small set of dunes and the grasses you can see in this photo. The other beauty of this beach is the lack of people…. Well there were four of us on this day!

Now, the one thing that really persuaded me to head to Poldhu was the lovely cloud. It was hanging in ribbons across the sky, drawing the eye out to sea. A similar cloud effect can be seen here Gwithian beach in spring.  The sun light was also dappled, you can see the middle right third of the photograph being bathed in sunshine. That is not post processing trick.

Of course this photo has been processed. A few layers desaturated and some dodging and burning to increase the texture of the fore ground and the rock in the distance. A curves adjustment was made for the cloud. Curve adjustments, as I understand, effect all the tones in an image, giving a better result.
