Church cove, Cornwall, Seascape photograph
Seas and Skies
Thought I would share this photograph of Cornwall with you all. It was captured a few weeks ago, while on a walk. As you can see the photo has under gone a bit of processing.
Working with the Photograph
The initial photograph was taken and capture in RAW. This allows for an element of post capture exposure and white balance control, without loosing image quality. I made three exposures of this image to increase the dynamic range of the photograph. I then made them into one photograph – this is cheating as you really should take 3 or more bracketed exposures in camera, but I would loose the sharpness of the sea if I took this approach with this shot.
Now I have one HDR (high dynamic range) photograph, save in 16bit to keep the quality during editing. I tweaked the levels, then curves. Now it was time to convert to black and white. I decided on the levels I was happy with to bring the best out of the different aspects of the photograph. Now for the bit I love. I don’t know why, but dodging and burning shadows and highlights really allows you to be artistic and bring the photograph to life. There are other ways to get similar effects, but I love painting the image with light in this way.
Separation between darks and lights is what gives the image depth and draws the eye to certain aspects of the photograph. I used to be very conscious of creating a perfect conversion, and making sure every stroke or tweak I made was perfect and could not be seen. However, I have moved to a more organic approach, rather like brush strokes on a painting, they don’t matter as long as they are part of the creation process and the subject is right. Certain aspects have to be done right, but others can add to the artistic effect. This shot Gwithian tides seascape has a similar feel to it.
