Goose barnacle - Close up

These guys were washed up at Porthallow, on the Lizard Peninsula. They are found in most Oceans, but live in deep water where they cling onto items flaoting in the sea, filtering goodness from it.

The name goose barnacles, came from the fact that people thought Barnacle Geese hatched forom these shells.

From a photography aspect, they make an interesting photgraph. Thier colours, white and red brown make for somthing a little different. As well as not being seen very often, all in all they are a great study and intesesting subject.

Insects, the macro world

Insect on Daisy

Insect on Daisy

This little critter was taken on a recent coastal walk from the red river on the North Cornish coast.

Capturing the image

It is important to look at many different levels if you are just going for a walk to take images. Details and opportunities can be easily missed if you are not careful.

These bright red insects were all over clumps of daisies and the striking contrast of thier red bodies against the yellow and whites of the flower were amazing.

Sadly I was not fully prepared and did not have a macro lens, or tripod to take full advantage of this situation. The wind was very strong also making the flower move around a lot, so I worked on the numbers theory - shoot loads of images and 1 or 2 will be usable.

Macro images

Now I had gotten my head into this macro world it became alive with images and offered me new ideas to work on in the future. This little guy to the pictured to the right then appeared. Having followed it, finally it settled. I had been monitoring my camera so I was ready as soon as the chance arose to capture it, and I did.

Sadly the butterfly is not pin sharp, but the grass head it landed on gives you an idea how tiny this butterfly really is.

I am not very good with insects and my book about them is not with me currently. If you know what type of insect these are then please let me know by commenting on this post.

Seagulls on a rail at Helston boating lake

Seagulls on the rail

Seagulls on the rail

This image captures nice perspective although the gulls are not fully sharp. The rail was full of gulls at the start, but by the time I had positioned myself they had decided to leave!!! I guess a lesson here is to be prepared at all times to get your shot.

Capturing the image

As simple as it sounds if you haven’t got your camera you will see hundreds of possible shots and miss them. If you have your camera, keep making sure it is ready to go, invest a bit of time in making sure it set ready to go. The more images you take and the better prepared you are the more sucess you will have with your digital photography.

It would be great to hear and see shots you have captured because you were in the right place at the right time! Comment on this post to tell us your fortune.
