Photo of Cornwall

Another addition to my collection of Cornwall photography landscape images.

This photo looks back to Poldhu cove and the Marconi Centre on the headland.

Taken about 4 weeks ago, the image has been processed (developed) in Nikon Capture 2, a very good quality editing tool to keep the dynamic range (tones) in an image.

I realise this is black and white, but a good tonal range converts better, giving more depth to the final image and allowing more headroom in the image to play with settings.

I would love for you to post your comments to this image here at digital-scene, your feedback is very valuable. Please feel free to ask any questions or make critique on any of my images.

Long Exposure Black and White in Cornwall

Here is some more Cornwall Photography. This time Pendennis Head, Falmouth. I wanted to add another dimension to this photograph… Time.

Clouds were perfect for this type of photo. Lots of breaks with vivid white edges, yet the underside of the cloud looked dark and heavy.

The breeze was ideal, just giving the clouds movement and allowing time for the sea to flatten with the long exposure, yet keeping some definition to the cloud formations.

The trick to this kind of photo taking is getting a sharp focus without any filters, applying the filter to the lens without upsetting the focus and then keeping all the equipment steady while balancing on a sharp, barnacle encrusted, green, slippery rock while the shutter is open.

Well the effort is worth it I reckon. The dimension the cloud gives, pulling your eye into the horizon is great. The elements all work with each other and the textures blend in this natural environment to produce a really pleasing result. I guess the only down side is the hot spot to the right of the small castellated building. But form me it adds to the picture. What do you think? Please comment on this photograph to give me some feedback.

Cornish Landscape photo

So many options for photography in Cornwall, yet I seem to be going back to places I know and love. I guess it stems from understanding what will be available to photograph in the conditions I have, combined with little time just to get out and take photos of subjects I like. I have written here – Caerthillian Cove located on The Lizard in Cornwall about building your knowledge about an area.

Poldhu offers a large expanse of sand at low tide, with the sun over to the left of this image. There is also a small stream flowing out to sea, down the beach which offers lovely leading lines into any photograph.

The top of the beach homes a small set of dunes and the grasses you can see in this photo. The other beauty of this beach is the lack of people…. Well there were four of us on this day!

Now, the one thing that really persuaded me to head to Poldhu was the lovely cloud. It was hanging in ribbons across the sky, drawing the eye out to sea. A similar cloud effect can be seen here Gwithian beach in spring. The sun light was also dappled, you can see the middle right third of the photograph being bathed in sunshine. That is not post processing trick.

Of course this photo has been processed. A few layers desaturated and some dodging and burning to increase the texture of the fore ground and the rock in the distance. A curves adjustment was made for the cloud. Curve adjustments, as I understand, effect all the tones in an image, giving a better result.

Seas and Skies

Thought I would share this photograph of Cornwall with you all. It was captured a few weeks ago, while on a walk. As you can see the photo has under gone a bit of processing.

Working with the Photograph

The initial photograph was taken and capture in RAW. This allows for an element of post capture exposure and white balance control, without loosing image quality. I made three exposures of this image to increase the dynamic range of the photograph. I then made them into one photograph – this is cheating as you really should take 3 or more bracketed exposures in camera, but I would loose the sharpness of the sea if I took this approach with this shot.

Now I have one HDR (high dynamic range) photograph, save in 16bit to keep the quality during editing. I tweaked the levels, then curves. Now it was time to convert to black and white. I decided on the levels I was happy with to bring the best out of the different aspects of the photograph. Now for the bit I love. I don’t know why, but dodging and burning shadows and highlights really allows you to be artistic and bring the photograph to life. There are other ways to get similar effects, but I love painting the image with light in this way.

Separation between darks and lights is what gives the image depth and draws the eye to certain aspects of the photograph. I used to be very conscious of creating a perfect conversion, and making sure every stroke or tweak I made was perfect and could not be seen. However, I have moved to a more organic approach, rather like brush strokes on a painting, they don’t matter as long as they are part of the creation process and the subject is right. Certain aspects have to be done right, but others can add to the artistic effect. This shot Gwithian tides seascape has a similar feel to it.

Long exposure of Gwithian Beach

I am really enjoying long exposure photography, it provides the ability to capture so many different aspects of the image, creating a multi dimensional photograph.

This image is of Gwithian beach at low tide. The falling tide and the Red River have carved sharp angles into the sand on the outside of the bend. Yet, on the inside it has smoothed the sand, rounding and mellowing it.

The use of a long exposure has softened the water and cloud. I like the interaction in the image of softness verse harshness and the black and white conversion, in my opinion accentuates these factors. The horizon provides a norm, a point of reference, something that cannot be doctored. I guess it acts as an anchor to the photograph.

The soft haze, and direction of the red River, draws my eye into the photo, making me look harder into the distance to look for aspects I can recognise.

Creating thought and emotion is my goal when I take what I consider to be “ART” photographs. A picture postcard type image can convey many messages and reproduce / enhance memories. It also allows people to share views with others. There is a huge value in this and I enjoy that style of photography. Yet, this image of Gwithian is more kindred to my heart. It shares a place that can be recognised, if you know the area well, but allows interpretation and creates intrigue.

This photograph, captures all the elements of a Cornish beach.

Wave photograph at Cape Cornwall

After spending a few hours the other day looking for different angle to capture Cape Cornwall, I took a walk along the beach, past the harbour out to the right side of the cliff and saw this monster of a sand sucker working.

I estimate the wave face was building to about 12 feet. The wave was drawing out a huge amount of water, before reaching a crest and breaking on a messy, yet impressive right hander. In surfing terms, this wave closed out – big style, yet her brothers and sisters were working well across the rock reef below.

Not a surfing wave, but well worth a photograph in my opinion. This huge monster, breaking towards the sun was worth standing on shallow rocks to add to my record of Cornish waves. The sea spume and mist was hampering every shot I took. Lens cloth at the ready, listening out for the surge and one eye on the water level for my safety to bring you this wave in action. Please, if you are looking at capturing large waves, be careful. Know the tide state and remember, freak waves do occur – have a route to safety at all times.
