Great fun was had by all in this photograph taken in St Ives, Cornwall. Capturing children just enjoying themselves is great.
This shot I took almost reminds me of a band cover that you would have found in the NME. It is full of fun and shows lots of different aspects of the group.

Location portraiture
I seem to be spending more and more of my time out there practicing location photography. If I am not working, I am using my boys to practice with. The world provides endless backgrounds to add emotion and interest to photographs. Steel sheeting, old rough painted doors, fences and block walls are some of my most used backgrounds. On there own, they sound rather dull, but used properly, softened and balanced they provide very interesting backdrops for portrait photography.
There are so many things to consider when looking for that portrait to show emotion, freshness and fun. This was shot on a piece of play equipment in Porthleven, Cornwall.
The orange structure works beautifully to tie the subject into the photograph. A blast of strobe from camera left and a few tweaks later… voila!

The photographer
It is about time that I shared a shot of me. I have been writing this photography blog and sharing my work, yet never have I showen you a half decent portrait photograph of me.
Well here it is. Taken in my house by my other half (there is a portrait captured in Cornwall of her here) using a mobile lighting set up. The image, apart from grey scaling is off camera. I must admit I helped set the lighting up, but the camera was not worked by me!
It felt strange to be infront of the camera for a change, but I also learnt alot during the experience. It was a valuable 20 mins and I am looking forward to the next time.
A good self portrait will be my next challange. It is much harder then you might tink to capture a quality image of yourself.

Bright beach winter photo
A quick image to share, cropped in a similar style to the portrait photograph below.
The winter sun, colours of the skin, fur on the hood and the sand background all compliment each other perfectly. Again I love the tight crop and bokeh (technical term for blur). It really makes the subject leap out of the photo, yet places him in context with the surroundings of a beach. Its situations like this when I realise why I love photography in Cornwall

Life's a beach
Here is one of my latest portrait photographs from a beach here in Cornwall. As a photographer I prefer location shoots, you get the very best out of your subjects!
The low winter sun is perfect for adding interest to a photo, combined with a relaxed subject and great location you cannot go wrong.
The crop for this image is very tight as you can see. Printed and mounted they look very sharp and contemporary. A great addition to any wall.

Now you see me! - portrait in Cornwall
I have had a recent run on child portraits here in Cornwall and this is one of my latest set. The requirement here was to get some photographs of children playing, presented in a “different” way. Black and white shots were the order of the day.
Getting that feeling of trust is the most important aspect. Playing armies was the way to get this young man in the mood to pose for photographs. Shooting at long range, then getting up close as the bond built.
The idea was not to capture a perfect pose, but capture something interesting with a particular aspect and setting. That said, I am always surprised at the photographs parents choose. Often not the one I would have selected, hence why I provide a number of different captures to suite different requirements.

Black and white child photo
Thought I would share a few images from a recent set of Child location portrait and life style photographs.
I was asked to create a collection of natural shots of a young sister and brother in a large garden area. Luckily for Cornwall, light was with me, and it was a lovely mellow light allowing soft gentle tones and textures.
It took a while for the children’s character to show through, then I was on. I captured a great selection of photographs, choosing 16 for the parents to select from.
These portrait shots are a few of my favorites for different reasons. I would love to hear your feedback and let me know if you would like to discuss some portraits of your children.

Another Black and White portrait in a different location, with a lot of ambient light to check a few ideas and features out.
I am getting more and more requestes for balck and white portrait work. It is seeming to be the most popular format at the moment. I know it fashionable at the moment, but I wonder if it is because I am displaying a lot of my black and white portrait work here at digital-scene.
What do you think of this image? I am always looking for opinion on what could be improved in a photograph…. please let me know by commenting on this photo.

I would be interested in any feedback you have on this portrait photograph of my other half. It has been very well recived at Flickr and the direct feedback I have had is great at the moment.
This was taken in the front roon using off camera strobes. The posibilities with these flash units are endless. When I get to someones house it takes about 40 seconds to rig up and get shooting. They are great for balancing natural light, achiving a sharp portrait photograph on scene with a subtly lit photograph.

Things are going strength to strength, with bookings coming in thick and fast in recent weeks!! Most of my work as mentioned below has been child portraits. The summer ball period was very busy indeed, with sequins and young men in smart suits being photographed for future memories and proud grandparents. I have even had a few portrait requests for Christmas presents!! (far mor organisied than I ever am).
Below are a couple of images of Sarah before her summer ball. These natural light portraits were converted to black and white. The location for the portraits was her home, before the transport arrived to whisk her off to the Ball!!
