Poldhu Cove, Cornwall

Cornish Landscape photo

So many options for photography in Cornwall, yet I seem to be going back to places I know and love. I guess it stems from understanding what will be available to photograph in the conditions I have, combined with little time just to get out and take photos of subjects I like. I have written here – Caerthillian Cove located on The Lizard in Cornwall about building your knowledge about an area.

Black and White photograph "LOAN TREE"

Just a Tree?

I so love digital photography, it allows you to really play, tweak and adjust in the field, allowing you to try so many adjustments and ways of approaching an photograph.

Landscape photography in Cornwall is just so relaxing. You get to walk, enjoy and admire your surroundings. Looking for that hidden aspect which will just work when captured with a box of electrics, some glass and a steady hand. There can be pressures when you are waiting for the right light, the smoke from a chimney to blow the right direction, or the horses on the cliff edge are just in the right place, yet all those aspects  aside, you can choose to capture a peaceful, relaxing image that can be honed.

Gwithian Beach

Gwithian Beach

Gwithian Beach photograph

The North Cornish coastline has helped me produce some great Cornish photographs over the past few weeks. Gwithian is an area I have focused on and its provided me with some spectacular results.

The topography of  Landsend as the moist air hits Sennen cove, with the prevailing winds create some lovely cloud formations, that glide up the North Cornish coast line. Combined with the breeze, a photograph showing movement and interest can be captured.

St Michaels Mount

I really like the leading lines in this photograph drawing the eye to St Michaels mount.

This photograph was taken in Cornwall  in February 2009 on one of the best days that year. I had been waiting for a good low tide and surf, to get the reflection of St Michael’s mount on the wet sand and the leading lines.

I think the photograph can be improved upon, but I am happy with it at the moment. There are lots of other angles to capture, so expect to see some more photographs of the Mount soon.

Sennan Cove lookout

This photograph captures the former coastguard lookout on Mayon Cliff at Sennen Cove. Great views are available from here across to the long ships light house, Cape Cornwall (to the right of this photograph) and Lands End.  This is a very popular area for tourists, being located on the Southwest Coastal path. Getting a photograph without people in it is a challenge.

This photograph is available for sale, but price will be on application as it is a bespoke size.

Photographing locations

Finding locations to take photographs can be a time consuming job if you just go out to collect photographs from everywhere you visit. What am i talking about I hear you ask?

Rather than going out, armed with your camera, finger at the ready, consider taking time to find locations and make a note of what will make that particular location work well for you. Note this down and take advantage of situations when they arise.

Black and White photograph of Poldhu West Cornwall

Image of Cornwall

Poldhu Cove, here in Cornwall bleak and cold. This was taken only a few weeks ago and the beach should be packed with holiday makers, but sadly due to the weather the visitors have been few and far between.

I am going to build a collection of photographs from around my local area and try and capture and share with you some of the more interesting and unusual aspects of Cornwall, its coast, places of interest and general interest photographs.

If you have any ideas of places you would like to see then please contact us, or if you would like a portrait or other work taken at any of the locations let me know. You can contact me here Digital photography contact form

Dartmoor under snow

Dartmoor under snow

Dartmoor under snow

This photograph was taken late winter 2008 on Dartmoor close to Prince Town.

I was returning home from visiting my family in Honiton and due to the weather, I decided to return home by crossing the moor. There was a good covering of snow in many places but suddenly I came across this view and the most amazing shafts of sun light playing across the moor.

Photograph of Dartmoor

In the shafts as you can see there was good light, with the fringes looking to the naked eye, as almost night time. Capturing this strong contrast was a challenge. I took about 6 images all at differing exposures with my Nikon 40 digital SLR, I was delighted with the slightly surreal photograph of Dartmoor that came from this.
