Porthleven mono surf

That’s what I heard! I had no car and had to wait for while to get use of one. I wanted to get some Cornwall photography surf shots, but things were against me. You get some great images from this location. Here are some Porthleven surf competition photographs from November 09.

Anyway, after a few hours I was able to get in the car, camera, lenses, memory cards,  cleaning cloth and a drink. Oh, need fuel……

Well I arrived, and Porthleven was looking good. The best of the swell had passed in the morning, yet it was still working well. Great sets pushing through and lots of surfers to photograph.

I headed to some rocks to get as close as possible to the surfing, keeping one eye on the surge around the rocks and started to shoot. There were lots of other photographers at the cliff top, enjoying their craft.

Light was not great to start with. Plenty to capture the action, but it made the scene very flat. The low light was not really an issue for me, I had already made my mind up that I wanted some slow shutter speed images, trying to add more dimension into my photographs. Keeping the surfer as sharp as possible was the challenge, yet having motion in the wave. I caught a few nice ones.

This is were digital-media works best, you can fire off lots of photo’s until you get the one you are happiest with! (there is always room for improvement). Here are a collection of my Latest Surf photographs. These were taken in Porthleven at the surf comp held on the reef, 8th November 2009. Sorry it has taken such a long time for a post, but I have had no broadband for weeks, due to a house move.

Leven Surfer Photograph

Reef break photograph

This surfer was photographed back in January 2009 enjoying the first of the years swell.

Capturing long range surf photographs involves a lot of fun and speed to react to the ever changing environment. No two shots ever require the same settings on the camera.  I am always tweaking and adjusting settings while having one eye on the break so as not to miss the action.

Kiteboarding Gwithian

Gwithian Kiteboarders

I decided to travel over to Gwithian and walk across the sand to Godrevy. There was a great wind blowing on-shore and a messy blown out swell.  About half way into my walk, towards the Godrevy end I noticed these two kiteboarders kitting up and prepping their gear.

I watched them launch the traction kites and then off they went, carving up the inner shore line. I would guess they were comfortably moving in excess of 20 knots across the shore line, throwing up water behind them on sharp carves and pulling aerial tricks. I was fascinating watching them, challenging to capture them on a photograph.

A lot of the tricks they pulled looked huge, but lost against the sky – no sense of scale! The carves were quick and the light was low and into my face, so I had to get in a better position with the sun, looking for a sense of scale as well.

As you can see it all came together for this photo. No big airs, but great depth and scale as well as a good amount of spray coming from the board.

Skateboarding photograph

This image was taken at Helston Skate park. I was asked to get an image, then make it into a graphic image, not looking like a photo. I came up with about 6 alternative images and this was the chosen image to be used on a flyer.

Digital photography lends its self very well to this kind of image manipulation, presenting the photo in new fresh ways!

Kiteboarders at Marazion

These are a few digital photographs I took last weekend of some kiteboarders working the waves at Marazion near Penzance, West Cornwall.

The location is amazing. A long curving beach offering a reasonable often small wave in the right conditions. The dramatic back drop of St Michaels Mount, a national trust building helps provide scale to the ariel manoeuvres these guys pull.
