Equine photographs

This equine photograph was taken back in the summer while I was working on capturing movement by panning the camera and using a slower shutter speed to through the background out.

This approach gives the feel of movement and adds a new dimension to the photograph. The image is not pin sharp but conveys the movement and muscle mass off the horse.

Taking photographs of horses is a challenging task. I guess I am lucky having spent the past ten years around these animals, I have a sound understanding of how they are likely to behave allowing me to capture the animals true nature to its maximum potential.

Equine photography

I enjoy the whole variety of equine photography, from the horse and rider shots we all know, to more story book images of the farrier visiting, the walk back to the field and the horse just having fun. There are so many aspects to photograph.

When it comes to presenting equine photography a popular solution is 3 images side by side on one large paper. Two images of the horse just being a horse, complimented by a horse and rider / owner photograph in the middle. This banner photograph covers all aspects of the horse and really tells a story and records great memories!!!

Equine portrait - Mare and Foal

Mare and foal portrait

Mare and foal portrait

This photograph of a Foal and Mare was taken at very short notice, after a surprise when the owner turned up to the stable, only to be greeted with a foal!

Mare and Foal portrait

I was asked to capture some photographs while the foal was still young. The weather was really poor and I was very conscious of upsetting the Mare or Foal.

In a very short period of time I managed to get some great shots in the livery yard. They required a little post capture work to remove unwanted objects, people, and background.

This image was selected by the owner. At full resolution you can pick out every hair on the foals neck and mane, with the background being the flank of its mother.

I have also been requested by the owner for portraits of 3 more horses she owns. I will let you know how this goes.

Equine Portrait - Merlin

Merlin - Equine portrait

This was a recent job where I was requested to capture the horse in natural light, but showing the muscle groups was important. They also wanted a soft feel to the image.

Natural light Portraits

This image was taken in the shade on an overcast day. This way you get a much more gentle light, but it is still very descriptive to the subject. Reflectors can be used to divert the angle of the light, but not ideal with horses!
