Smoothing water photograph

One of my favorite aspects of photography is using the camera system to add extra depth dimension to photographs. There are many ways this can be done in camera, without the use of photo editing software.

This photograph was captured using 3 filters. Two were ND (nutrel density) filters with another graduated filter to melow the top edge of the image, where the sun was having most impact. The filters were used to counter act the long exposure required to flattern the water and give it the silky feel it has. the exposure I used was about 25 seconds with an ISO 0f 50. The low sun also helps to add the shimmer to the water, increasing the silky feel of the photograph.  Also it highlighted the front edges and top surface of the stepping stones.

Photograph editing

Post capture editing was minimal for this image. I used Nikons NEFF file format (RAW) and adjusted the white balance in the editing suite.  A small adjustment of the levels was still required. Curves were adjusted to increase the tonal contrast and it was converted to black and white.  Finally, to get the image to print well in A4, I had to crop the image slightly.

Its worth spending a little extra time on a shoot to get the image as close to perfect in camera, saving valuable editing time on the computer. Over the next few months I will explain in greater depth the terms I have used here and the methods I employ to get the photographs you can see here.
