I have had lots of fun today taking lots of digital photographs of Ruby the German short haired pointer. We had a kind a location shoot near Loe Bar in Helston.

Animal / Pet photography is great fun and you never quite know what you might get. I took a whole bunch of photographs of the dog at play and at rest. There are some lovely action shots of her running around as well as some detailed head photographs.

The location, as you can see a stubble field in Cornwall works so well. the gentle fawn tones really help the dog to stand out. Also, this is a natural environment for a dog like this to be in – working the stubble for Partridge.

I guess matching the background to the subject is part of the knack. It gives the photograph a sense of purpose and the subject seems to naturally fit. the same can be same for all portrait photography.

There is of course another approach, where you juxtapose subject and background to create interest and poetic depth. This can provide interesting results, but with animals you often loose the natural look that is in essence what you are trying to capture.

The challenge with this side to photography is creating a sharp image. Animals tend to move around more than children!  The movement is fast, yet if you know and understand the animal it is predictable to an extent. I suppose having worked with Dogs, Falcons and horses most of my life I understand the movements and reactions they make, helping me to get the photograph I am looking for.
